A new season is about to begin for Stettler Variety Showcase (SVS), and it is getting things started with a Juno-nominated performer.

John Wort Hannam is an Albertan Canadian Folk Music Award winner for best album, as well as his Juno nomination, and he will be headed to Stettler to kick off the SVS season on Nov. 4.

According to Donna Stadelmann, one of the volunteers and organizers behind SVS, there are only around 40 tickets left for the Nov. 4 dinner theatre show, and they are going fast.

“We’re third-time lucky,” said Stadelmann.

Hannam was originally supposed to perform in Stettler in 2020, but unfortunately, those plans were derailed by the pandemic. He was re-scheduled again for 2021, but those plans were derailed again.

The Nov. 4 dinner show will be taking place at the Stettler Community Hall; once that show is over, the remaining four shows of the season will take place at the Performing Arts Centre.

On Dec. 3, brass quintet Buzz Brass will take the stage, followed by duo Charms on Jan. 28, 2024.

The Showcase will take a break during February, and return in March, with the Celtic-rooted, Juno-winning, group the McDades stopping in Stettler on March 3.

On April 7, the 2023-24 concert season will draw to a close when singer-songwriter and pianist Jeffery Straker comes to town. Straker is a former Roots-folk Artist of the Year in Saskatchewan in 2020 and 2021.

“All have a presence online,” said Stadelmann, noting that anyone wanting to check out the musicians can do so easily.

All the Performing Arts Centre shows will have two performances to choose from, a 1:30 p.m. or a 7 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at Grate Kitchen Shoppe on Main Street, Stettler, though plans are in the works to have online ticket sales available sometime in the new year.
