The second performance in Coronation Royal Performing Arts’ (CRPA) 2023-24 is set to take place on Dec. 2 at the Coronation Community Hall.

Headlining the December show will be Alberta-based crooner Amy Bishop.

Bishop describes her music, using her producer’s words, as “blue-eyed soul” replete with meaning.

According to Bishop, her December show in Coronation will feature a combination of originals, favourite covers and some holiday favourites to get people ready for the Christmas season.

While she will be performing solo for this show, Bishop doesn’t see it as a bad thing.

“I love playing solo,” said Bishop, noting that when she is playing with a band and a pre-set song list, changing on the fly is harder to do.

“If I’m feeling energy from the audience, I can change direction.”

Bishop has been entertaining full-time for two decades, though she does not do lengthy tours.

“I don’t like to be gone for more than a week at a time,” said Bishop.

“Family is a priority.”

Bishop says she likes being around for her children, the youngest of which is in Grade 9, so that they can keep their regular routines. According to her, it’s only a “few more years” until the last one is away to university, so she wants to enjoy the time with her kids while she can.

As for her music, Bishop has eight albums released, including a holiday album. The most recent album was released two years ago, during the pandemic.

Born in Ontario, Bishop has called Alberta home since 1980 and has been a singer her entire life.

Her father was a church choir director, so singing was just part of what the family did, says Bishop.

“I just thought it was something everyone did,” said Bishop, though over time she has learned, “Not everyone could do what I could do.”

Following Bishop’s December show, CRPA will break for the festive season before returning on Jan. 6 with Credence Clearwater Reprisal.
