Battle River-Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek was in Three Hills, located in the far-west corner of the constituency, for a meet-and-greet on July 10 along with federal Conservative Party leader Erin O’Toole.
The visit was to talk about restoring fairness and respect between Ottawa and Alberta, says the Conservatives.
About 200 people came out to the Home Place Ranch, just outside of Three Hills for the event, which was part of O’Toole’s southern Alberta tour.
“You have been there for Canada. So, it is only fair that the rest of Canada will be there for you. It is time for the unfairness to end,” said O’Toole, according to a press release.
Talking points at the presser included the Conservative Party’s promise that, if elected, their first act would be an equalization rebate of $4 billion.
O’Toole says Albertans paid that amount into the Fiscal Stabilization Program during the economic downturn.
He also promised to pass the Equalization and Transfers Fairness Act, a bill introduced by Alberta MP Tom Kmiec and seconded by Kurek.
The bill aims to bring accountability to the equalization formula.
O’Toole took questions from the crowd after his presentation.
Also in attendance were neighbouring MPs Martin Shields and Earl Dreeshen as well as Shadow Minister for Agriculture Lianne Rood and municipal officials from the region.
