The Village of Donalda is the latest urban municipality in the region to face council unrest.

Following the resignations of councillors in both Halkirk and Big Valley last fall, Donalda has now lost quorum.

According to Scott Johnston, the Alberta Municipal Affairs press secretary, the Government of Alberta became aware that the village had lost quorum on Feb. 21, upon the resignation of two of the three sitting councillors.

“The Minister is currently considering his options to respond to the situation,” said Johnston, in an email response.

“A by-election must be held within 120 days after the vacancies have occurred.”

The resignations occurred at the same time as Mayor Douglas Booker is facing a recall petition, which Municipal Affairs was informed of on Feb. 7.

Booker is the sole elected councillor who currently retains his council position, however, until quorum is re-established, or the province appoints an official administrator, he nor the village administration can pass motions or spend money on behalf of the village.

Petitioners have until April 6 to gather the 88 signatures required for the petition to force Booker’s recall.
