The results of the Bashaw Star’s latest online poll come as little surprise.

When readers were asked ‘Should homeowners have the right to be armed with a firearm when defending their property?’, an overwhelming 39 of the 43 votes cast were in favour of the idea.

The question was raised in response to the continuing number of incidences of criminal activity happening at rural properties across central Alberta.

It also drew a discussion on the topic between readers on both sides of the topic on the Bashaw Community Events Facebook page.

Gudrun Feller stated, “I voted ‘No.’ There has to be a better solution for rural folks to be protected without loaded guns. I hope we don’t follow in the footsteps of our southern neighbour.”

Meanwhile, Sue Lassesen-Fowler advocated for the use of force noting, “A farmer can shoot a coyote or cougar that is threatening his family or livestock then why not when a so called human that is doing harm to his family or property?”

When Feller replied that it’s an issue of people, not coyotes, Fowler shot back that these people shouldn’t act like coyotes. She followed up with, “You just might change your mind when they steal you blind.”

“I would defend myself,” Feller said, “But I don’t think I would resort to killing another human being over possessions/personal property.”

Fowler added she would prefer to be prepared and would shoot someone to protect herself and family.
