Most fundraising events have one solitary purpose, although the annual Bashaw Meadows Christmas Tea is different.

While the Christmas Tea — set for Dec. 2 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Bashaw Meadows — does raise significant funds that are absolutely necessary for the operation of recreation programming at the seniors facility, the event is more than just garnering financial support.

All of the proceeds from the tea go to support the continuation of the leisure and recreation programming at the facility.

“It’s a time for the residents to be able to spend time with their families, their friends and the rest of the community of Bashaw,” said Iris Buchaski, the facility’s activity coordinator.

“It’s also a part of the getting them involved and helping to empower the residents to continue to enjoy life while promoting a healthily lifestyle.”

Along with partaking in some tea and a light lunch, the fundraiser includes a wonderful assortment of silent auction items as well as a door prize and a 50/50 draw that will likely see someone walk off with $1,000.

“The 50/50 has a maximum payout and we almost always sell out, so it’s a good chance somebody will win $1,000. It’s always amazing seeing the Bashaw community come together to support our residents,” Buchaski stated.

“As well, the silent auction will include a number of donated items from the community, plus a lot of handmade crafts and items made by our residents specifically for the fundraiser. Christmas is a very important time for the residents and, for me, it’s important to empower them through participation and to see them engaged and enhancing their lives by being involved. It’s very heartwarming.”

Aside from their wonderful creations — that would make great Christmas gifts — the residents assist in the decorating and helping during the event.

“All of this helps the residents feel special and gives them a purpose,” she added, “This event is so important in furthering that as well as helping us use the power of leisure to promote a good lifestyle and empower our residents.”

Anyone that may have additional silent auction items for the fundraiser is asked to come and drop them off at Bashaw Meadows.
