The Augustana Choir is heading out on an Alberta recruitment tour during their spring break.

A pair of concerts are slated for the Bashaw United Church on March 7, with another in Castor going on March 5. Both events will start at 7 p.m. with admission by donation.

This delightful evening of music will present works by Thomas Weelkes, Felix Mendelssohn, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Don Macdonald, Kim Andre Arnesen and more.

The concert will also feature solos by Augustana music majors in voice, piano and tuba.

The Augustana Choir, considered one of western Canada’s most successful undergraduate university choirs, performs an exciting and eclectic range of a cappella choral music from renaissance to the latest in contemporary choral compositions.

The choir is hoping the performances will draw some interest from students who want to be a part of the troupe while continuing their education at Augustana in Camrose.

With an active touring tradition, the choir performs concerts at the local, national and international stage, which included a tour of Cuba a year ago and one in Hungary in 2012. It has also performed at a prestigious national conference.

Successful auditions for the choir earn eligible students a choral scholarship unique to Augustana.

The choir is led by the award-winning choral conductor John Wiebe — who has the added repitoire of pianist, orchestral conductor, singer, educator, adjudicator and clinician.

Known for his energy, craftsmanship and passion for making music, Wiebe has multiple recordings, awards and broadcasts to his credit including the 2019 Choir Alberta Richard S. Eaton award.
