The celebration of student achievement from the previous school year saw a packed Bashaw School gymnasium with appreciative parents and classmates.

Awards ranging from Grade 1 to 12 and spanning a variety of the subjects, skills and attitudes were dished out to nearly 100 students. In addition, local individuals and businesses helped sponsor much of the $5,000 in cash awards handed out at the 20th annual ceremony.

Principal Myranda Shepherd noted the students showcased in the awards demonstrated excellence in either academics, athletics, leadership and work ethic.

“These awards are truly a testament to the support of the community, staff and parents,” she said.

“Thank you to all of those that support student recognition and for all of those receiving awards, congratulations on your success from last year. As you move onto your future, remember the important lesson that is the foundation of this ceremony — there is nothing more important than your character, as it will bring you worthwhile success in life.”

As for the ceremony, it was graduate Jaycee Dawbin who stole the show — appearing on stage more often than most of the presenters. Dawbin walked off with nine different awards that also came with some significant cash.

Dawbin was among the Grade 12 Rutherford Scholarship recipients plus the Governor General medal in addition to awards for top marks in Math 30-1, Physics 20/30, Biology 30 and Social Studies 30 as well as the Elks senior high service award, the Henschel award. She was also named the senior high female athlete of year.
