The conclusion to the junior curling season has come and gone, but not without one last bit of fun.
The Bashaw Curling Club played host to a fun family day of curling, all for free, on March 17 that attracted curlers, their families, friends and community residents.
Len Kohlman, coach of the junior curling program, stated the day was simply about finishing up the year with a chance to have some fun and enjoy people’s company.
“Everyone had a lot of fun, especially the kids, and it was a chance for some of the younger ones to come out with their parents to get on the ice to play,” he said.
“It was a great day and even better turn out than was expected with 12 teams that included a mix of kids and adults plus our junior teams.”
Each team was able to get in two games and despite the fun aspect of the event, the kids couldn’t help but get a little competitive with their parents.
In addition to the games, there was time for the competitors and others to sit and visit, have some lunch and then enjoy a roast beef dinner to polish off the day.
While the event was billed as the end of the junior curling season, Kohlman added it was also about opening the facility up to other members of the public in order to show off the rink and maybe garner an interest in the sport for others.
“Having this event open to everyone really did help, as it attracted a family that recently moved to the area and got them interested in wanting to sign up for curling next season,” he said.
