Ponoka Piston Poppers help neighbours

The Ponoka Piston Poppers car club were at it again, lending a hand to the folks in Stettler who were hosting The Canadian Coasters! The Coasters began with an idea that originated in 1966 by a group called the Historical Automobile Club of Canada (HASC). They thought that a cross Canada tour of antique vehicles would be just the thing to celebrate the cars and Canada’s Centennial in 1967. That first tour started in Victoria BC and travelled to St. Johns NL.

Johns NL.

This tour was hosted by various clubs as it passed through towns and cities along the way. People parading the cars came and went as holidays and mechanics allowed. The vehicles on the tour must be at least 25 years old, therefore considered antique. This year they began in Pipi Park NL and will end in Duncan BC running from June 27th to hopefully September 6th.

On August 22 and 23, Stettler hosted these intrepid travellers. A dinner was sponsored on the 23rd by the Central Alberta Vintage Auto Club and put on by our own Ponoka Piston Poppers! Bobby and Bruce picked up the pig and the cooker and dropped it off at the Community Center the night before. They, Doug and Mitch were the main cooks, a couple of whom got up at 4:45 AM to get that pork into the fire. Nine other members also came along to add to the fun with their cars and sage cooking advice.

Word is that approximately 100 good folks got to partake in an excellent roasted pork dinner, Coasters, CVAC and Piston Poppers. All enjoyed the meal, sharing road trip stories, car experiences and perhaps a few beers. Community members were invited to view the vehicles and join in the fun but they provided their own food.
