Some of our junior and senior high students competed in a badminton tournament on April 11th and 12th in Camrose.

The teams have been participating in before and after school practices since the middle of March. All practices were run by the coaches, Jesse Viske and Jerrit Brandt.

“I had a pretty good experience — I got to take home gold so that was pretty fun. I joined badminton because I’ve done it for a long time and it’s a sport that I do well at. I’ll keep playing badminton going into senior high because there are more tournaments than just two, so if you’re good enough, you can move on farther than just this region, so I’m excited and hope I can go pretty far,” said Grade 9 student, Mark Carlson.

The senior high students loaded the bus and travelled to Camrose on April 11th for the tournament, while the junior high students left on the 12th. After a long day, our school came home with several wins.

Mark Carlson won first place in Grade 9 boys singles, Taylor Fuller won second place in Grade 10 girls Singles, Andrew Kneeland won second in Grade 10 boys singles. Exchange student, Mayuka Usuda won second in Grade 11 girls singles, and Emily Kohlman won first place in Grade 11 girls singles.

The winners of these event will move on and compete again in the coming week. On April 17th, the senior high will compete once again, as will the junior high athletes on the 26th.

We are all cheering on our fellow students as they move forward. It’s been a great season for all of our Badminton athletes and we are looking forward to next year!

“This year has been a great year for the Bashaw School’s badminton players. They did a wonderful job at representing our school,” commented a Bashaw Staff member.
