A pow wow over the weekend was all about bringing family together.
Hosted by the Samson Cree Nation at the Panee Agriplex in Maskwacis, the pow wow was organized by the Kasohkowew Child Wellness Society (KCWS), explained Chief Vernon Saddleback.
“What it is is just part of our cultural program for our kids in care,” said Saddleback.
Foster parents and their kids are invited to the pow wow, which occurs every spring, in an effort to keep the Cree culture alive.
“It’s to circle around our culture…and for the families to reconnect,” said Saddleback.
He’s been involved with KCWS for the last seven years, and now as chief, and each year the pow wow gets bigger.
Saddleback said he’s grateful to all the caregivers and foster parents for their dedication. While not all of them live in Maskwacis, he’s proud of their hard work and efforts to help the young children.
“For some of them to come to our community and watch the pow wow, that’s amazing,” he added.
“I can’t say enough about our foster parents.”
Along with the dancing there was bannock, lunch for everyone involved, plus drum circles and hoop dancing.
