A weekend of slow pitch and raising awareness for an animal society proved a fun time at the Bashaw ag grounds.

The event aimed to raise funds and awareness for the Saving Grace Animal Society, explained organizer Jasmine McBride.

She was inspired to create the event because she remembers how she adopted a dog from the society, which brought her a lot of joy. “We ended up taking home a puppy on a (dog) nail-clipping day,” said McBride.

The more she researched, the more she wanted to help the group out.

“I figured this could be a good opportunity to push the two together,” she explained of the tournament and fundraiser/adoption day.

“Our biggest goal is to get some dogs adopted,” said McBride.

What the society does

Director Amanda McClughan said the fundraiser will help the Saving Grace Animal Society’s medical expenses.

There were several dogs up for adoption on Saturday and McClughan says they get quite busy with about 40 adoptions a month, although that number drops to about half over the summer months.

“We always have a waiting list. We have about 20 dogs that are waiting to come in,” she explained.

“The more adoptions we can do the more we can help.”
