Students at Bashaw School were recognized for excellence for work during their 2016 school year.

A special awards ceremony was held Sept. 24 at the school’s gym with more than 56 awards handed out to 70 students, explained new principal Myranda Shepherd. The monetary value for those awards is more than $6,000.

For Shepherd the awards ceremony is enjoyable for two reasons.

Firstly, it gives students recognition for their hard work the previous school year. “It’s not simply academic pursuits but it’s also taking a look at citizenship and work ethic.”

The second piece for Shepherd is seeing such strong community support from parents and sponsors.

“It’s just another representation of just how important — in a small rural K to 12 school — a community is,” said Shepherd.

Seeing that involvement makes her feel hopeful.

“I’ve known coming into Bashaw that the community supports its school,” she said, adding that she is proud to see such strong commitment from students as well.

Past principal Craig Dimond was also recognized during the awards and was presented with a special art canvas showcasing the old and the new school.

Jackie Northey presented the artwork to Dimond. She praised his dedication to the school and community over the years.

“When you have someone who is an excellent teacher as well as an engaged leader and community member, the impact is even greater,” Northey told attendees.

She pointed out the school is a big part of the community, which has seen enhancement of key programs including the breakfast for learning and arts programs.

On top of that the completion of the school’s full size gymnasium would not be possible without strong support from the community and school leadership.

Northey added that the school will miss Dimond, who has taken on the role of assistant principal at École Camrose Composite High School. However, he remains in Bashaw as a resident.

Shepherd said she was thrilled to see Dimond recognized for his dedication to the school over the years.
