Three horses had to be euthanized after a gravel truck rear-ended a truck and trailer hauling the animals.

On Oct. 3 at about 5 p.m. the Ponoka RCMP responded to the collision which was at Secondary Highway 604 and Range Road 270 southwest of Ponoka.

Both vehicles were westbound on Secondary Highway 604 when the gravel truck, collided with the rear end of the trailer, trapping the three horses inside.

There was extensive damage to the front end of the gravel truck causing the truck driver, from Edmonton, to be trapped. Members of the Ponoka County East District Fire Department extricated the driver who is believed to have suffered minor injuries.

A veterinarian was called to the scene who attended to the horses.

The investigation is ongoing but police say alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
