Bashaw’s senior girls Rebels had a tough challenge at their home basketball tourney.

“Overall the tournament went really well with a very close final between Eckville and Bawlf,” explained coach Amanda Swedberg. “Bawlf came out on top after a strong fourth quarter.”

Despite the challenge, the girls enjoyed playing host as well as showcasing the school’s gym to other teams. Swedberg said she is proud of the team, which has seen vast improvement over the season.

“We competed well and were in contention to win every one of our three games,” she explained.

One challenge was missing a couple of key players, which hurt the team’s overall chances. However, a special bonus during the tournament was being able to showcase Mayuka Usuda, a Japanese exchange student who played for the Rebels.

“She did a great job, and our fans really got behind her too,” said Swedberg.

As for league play, the team sits with a record of 1-3 with the last game played Tuesday night (results not available).

“We end the season with a home game against Bawlf…If we can pull off a win we should get into the playoff crossover game which would be a great way to end our season,” said Swedberg of the Tuesday game.

Winter struggles

The community of Viking came together Feb. 14 to help the Rebels girls and boys teams who were forced to stay overnight due to freezing rain and road safety concerns.

“The people in Viking really rallied to help us out. They found us sleeping bags and pillows, towels and toothpaste, and even came back and made pancakes in the morning,” said Swedberg.

“Mrs. Shepherd made sure we were well taken care of, she even ordered pizza and pop to have delivered to the school and was the behind the scenes coordinator of everything to make sure we were not only safe, but comfortable too.”
