Coming is as the host team isn’t always the best, but the Bashaw Rebels senior boys volleyball squad showed they weren’t out of place on the first day of the 1A provincial championship.
Yesterday (Nov. 22), the home side got its first match under its belt — a well deserved 25-18, 25-20 victory over Edmonton’s Parkland Immanuel Christian — in front of a overflowing crowd of locals.
Although, things didn’t conclude as well as the players and head coach Jesse Viske would have liked, as the Rebels fell in the final match of the day 25-16, 25-23 to the St. Mary’s Saints from Vegreville.
That left the club with tied for top spot in their round robin pool with St. Mary’s and St. Thomas More from Fairview, while Bow Island’s Senator Gershaw Gators sat with a victory after playing just once.
Central Alberta Christian of Lacombe leads the other pool after day one, posting a pair of wins, while three other teams sit with 1-1 records.
Today
The Rebels do face a bit of an uphill battle with two round robin games remaining — versus St. Thomas More at 12:45 p.m. followed by the late game at 8:15 p.m. versus the Gators.
Winning both would assure Bashaw of at least a quarterfinal playoff match, while only capturing one match would leave the Rebels needing a bit of help to make the playoff round on Saturday.
