It will be the usual closures in Bashaw come June 8.

Bashaw town council approved the normal road closures for the community’s annual Razzle Dazzle Day parade and afternoon festivities during its meeting May 23.

CAO Theresa Fuller explained that roadblocks on 52 and 50 St. plus 50 and 54 Ave. will go up just before 11 a.m. to keep traffic off the parade route, while barricades will then be put in place to block off 50 Ave. from 50 to 52 St. until 3 p.m. for the car show and other activities.

Fuller added that council also approved the request from the Bashaw and District Chamber of Commerce to shoot off its fireworks demonstration in the same location as last year — over the pond south of 50 Ave., across from the arena.

Awaiting info

Council handed back two issues to administration in order to gather more information before any further discussion takes place.

The first was a letter from a County of Stettler resident that sought support for an idea that would see the Bashaw Fire Department provide service to the area she lives in near Donalda.

The letter, presented to the county May 1 and a copy sent to the town, asked that both municipalities reach an agreement to have Bashaw respond to calls in that response area in order for better protection of residents with the shutdown of fire services in Donalda.

Fuller was instructed to wait and see until contacted by the county on the matter.

The other subject was about the number of fallen dead trees in the various Bashaw park areas and what should be done. Fuller noted that administration and public works were instructed to come up with a plan as some of the trees are in public areas while some are on private land.

Other business

Council passed a new bylaw that formalizes what has been an agreed understanding between the town and the company which provides electricity to Bashaw. The bylaw, which came about after an attempt by a different electricity provider to challenge part of the town’s electricity franchise agreement, prohibits any other entity from providing electrical distribution services within Bashaw’s limits except the company authorized to do so through an exclusivity agreement.

As well, council passed a two-year lease agreement worth a total of $2,000 with the Bashaw Seed Cleaning Co-op for approximately 0.5 acres of land located north of the current plant. The lease states that the road, built last year to create better access, must also be kept clear of bins, equipment or any obstructions as well as that the town accepts no liability for the use of the land.
