In an effort to maximize the space of the tennis courts, Bashaw council recommended tennis lines on both courts and pickleball lines on one side to have four pickleball courts.

Initially council was presented with a $53,000 proposal by TOMCO Sports Systems out of Calgary at its Aug. 16 meeting. This would complete the work since the paving has been completed. The proposal would provide surface treatment, lines, fencing, net installation and a reconfiguration of the courts.

It also provided four pickleball courts on one side and one tennis court on the other. A chain link fence would separate the pickleball courts.

Council had two issues with the project: first that councillors thought the full project was paid for and second, seeing it potentially be done in the spring, which would delay when residents could use it.

For the latter council recommended that lines for tennis be used on both sides to maximize the space and rather than use a chain link fence to have tennis net to separate the pickleball courts. Council also spoke of a desire to get the work done before winter so that residents would be able to use it when the weather improves.

For the former issue of cost, CAO Theresa Fuller said that the project was originally budgeted just to do the paving. Council recommended administration go back to the contractor to get a proposal based on the new layout.

After council’s recommendation, Fuller also said the town is looking into a Camrose legacy grant to help pay for the project.
