The Bashaw Curling Club’s 7th annual Bunnock tournament was held at the Bashaw Ag Grounds on July 8 and 9.
Bunnnock is a game of German-Russian background; it is a cross between horseshoes and bowling.
Competitors lob horse ankle bones (bunnock) at a row of more horse ankle bones on their opponent’s side and try to knock them over.
The Bashaw tournament had 72 four-person teams from all over Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan. Players and spectators enjoyed food and ice cream from various vendors. The warm weekend weather also allowed many on hand to enjoy the beer gardens.
Funds for the community were raised through the sale of 50-50 tickets as well as tickets for the Summer Fun Raffle.
The local Elks Club also hosted a pancake breakfast with proceeds going back to the community. Approximately 200 people were served at the Elks’ breakfast.
The top team at the event took home a $1,000.00 prize and bragging rights.
The Bashaw Curling Club would like to thank the many volunteers who helped make the event a success. They also are thankful to those who showed up and took part in the event, which is recognized by the International Bunnock Association.
Next year’s tournament is slated for July 6 & 7 and registrations for the tournament are expected to take place early April of next year.
