A few constituencies in Camrose County have been selected to receive Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding from the Government of Alberta, though so far, Bashaw is not on the list.

The funding is to help communities recover from the impact of COVID-19 while investing in infrastructure, according to a Nov. 24 news release.

“The MSI funding will allow municipalities to build and revitalize their local public infrastructure, while creating jobs and supporting long-term prosperity,” stated the release.

The Village of Bawlf will receive $426,000 to upgrade its water treatment plant, as well as $19,000 to replace a portion of Vrolson road.

The Town of Hardisty has been allotted $35,000 for a traffic impact assessment for the Tia-Hardisty Industrial Subdivision and $121,000 to extend waterlines located at the Hardisty Arena and 51 St.

The Town of Viking will get 40,000 to upgrade a storm water drainage line.

“Our UCP Government continues to invest in rural Alberta,” said Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely in the release.

“I am glad to have this investment in our community. These projects will ensure that our citizens are cared for.”

Earlier this month, Lovely stated that the Town of Bashaw would be recieving Municipal Stimulus Program (MSP) funding for an unspecified project that was approved under the program.

Bashaw is eligible for nearly $98,700 under the MSP program.

Back in August, town council decided to apply to the program for replacing the roof on the arena along with some interior painting and a small project at the curling rink.

CLARIFICATION:

The Bashaw Star would like to clarify that the article “Bashaw not receiving MSI funding, but project approved under MSP” which ran on page 3 of the Dec. 2, 2020 edition of the paper was in reference to the recent announcement of MSI funding approved for municipalities in Camrose County in a press release dated Nov. 24, 2020 and did not intend to imply the Town of Bashaw has never received MSI funding.

In the release, the Town of Hardisty, Town of Viking, Village of Bawlf and Village of Edberg were named as receiving MSI funding. The article stated that Bashaw had recently been approved for Municipal Stimulus Program (MSP) funding, to show the town has in fact received provincial funds. We apologize for any confusion.

Additional information provided by the office of MLA Jackie Lovely states that Bashaw’s total MSI allocation for this fiscal year is $316,502 and Bashaw’s additional MSP allocation is $98,661. The town also confirmed MSI funding was received in the fall and was allocated to Phase II of the 54 Ave. project that was completed last year.
