On Jan. 21, provincial Royal Purple recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal gathered in Bashaw for the ceremony.

Presenting the medals were MP Damien Kurek and MLA Jackie Lovely.

Recipients were selected by the Provincial Royal Purple Executive with nominations coming from Royal Purple members.

The local recipient was Doreen Kelly, a long-standing member and supporter of the Royal Purple. She has filled every role in the organization from flipping pancakes and making sandwiches to serving as the national president.

“Her steadfast direction and leadership have had a profound effect on the Camrose Lodge and community,” stated a press release.

Kelly was nominated by the Alberta Royal Purple Association.

“Bashaw was selected to host the event as the local chapter was keen to host the ceremony,” the release said.

Family members, recipients and elected officials were present for the event.

The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee awards recognize Albertans who are leaders in their communities. A one-time medal was created to honour 7,000 Albertans.
