Council decided to pursue some more quotes following a request from the Buffalo Lake Golden Age Club to have the town pay for replacement of the Happy Gang Centre roof.

The estimated cost to replace the roof is $33,000.

A letter from the club discussed at council’s Nov. 15 meeting outlined an ongoing issue with the roof for the past year.

The letter noted that leaks have once again been appearing in the building’s roof and that it has been determined by a local contractor that it should be replaced. In addition, as the town owns the building, the club made the request for it to pay for the replacement project with the club stating it could provide some financial assistance if needed.

However, council expressed concern about the price estimate provided for the project and, with the expectation of the town footing the bill, that it would be in the town’s interest to seek out other companies for quotes on the problem.

CAO Theresa Fuller added that once the project cost is finalized, the club would be informed and any possible contribution it could make would be established at that time.

Santa Day

Council approved the temporary closure of several streets for the annual Santa Day parade route through downtown, slated for Dec. 1.

The route will follow the well established annual trip down Main Street, but with a big twist this year from organizers — the Bashaw and District Chamber of Commerce.

The parade will get under way at 11:30 a.m. following the day being kicked off at the Bashaw Agricultural Grounds with the Elks pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Once the parade is completed, several local businesses and volunteers will be at the ag grounds main hall from noon to 4 p.m. operating a large variety of games and activities for the children.

Meanwhile, Santa will be available at the Bashaw Royal Canadian Legion from 2 to 4 p.m.

Other business

Delegations from both the Bashaw Youth Foundation and the Bashaw Public Library presented council with their annual budget requests for 2019.

The library has kept its contribution request the same as the past three years — $8,500 — while the youth foundation is asking for an increase to just under $23,700, citing higher wages and utility expenses as the primary factors in the request.

Council has deferred any decisions until it begins its budget discussions early in the new year.

Council delayed passage of second and third reading of the two intermunicipal agreements with Camrose County, as the county has yet to hold the public hearing process on one of the agreements.

It’s anticipated the agreements will be finalized in time to be approved next month.
