UPDATE: Wetaskiwin hotel up in flames, high school closed due to smoke

Fire crews have been dealing with a fire at the historic Rose Country Inn

UPDATE: Smoke from the hotel fire is still billowing.

The Wetaskiwin Composite High School closed for the afternoon due to health concerns and the excessive smoke.

Background

A fire has engulfed the historic Rose Country Inn in Wetaskiwin.

It’s not known the cause of the blaze early morning March 19 but Wetaskiwin Fire Services along with the Millet Fire Department are battling the smoke and the fire.

It’s believed to have occurred a few hours ago.

According to witnesses on scene there is a lot of smoke in the area and crews are still on scene. An area around the inn has been blocked from the public as billowing waves of smoke continue.

It’s believed that some of the walls have started to collapse.
