A central region volleyball team powered its way to a convincing win in what will be the final club experience for its players.
The Forestburg-based Southwest Central Wildfire U17-18 girls volleyball team defeated the Olds Wolves 25-23 and 25-18 to win the “COVID Cremation” tournament held Saturday, Aug. 14, in Consort School.
Wildfire players hail from Region Four - Parkland, including two players from Bashaw.
“We missed close to two seasons due to COVID-19 restrictions, and this gave us a final opportunity to play as a club before moving on to other things,” said Kailyn Horon, team captain.
Wildfire didn’t get off to a good start in the first set of the finals. The Olds Wolves held a lead until the latter stages of the game, but improved serve reception and first-ball passing enabled Wildfire to catch up and pull out the win.
Set two was again close in the early stages, but Wildfire pulled away to a six-point lead midway through.
“We played our best in this set,” said Horon. “We made a blocking adjustment, which pretty much shut down their main hitter, and our attacks and serves were overpowering.”
Wildfire also played well in round robin action, defeating teams from Wetaskiwin (Sabres), Calgary (Rampage), and a second team from the province’s central region (Blue Synergy).
Coaches, players and parents lamented the end of their time together, but each was happy to have ended on a winning note.
“This is an extraordinary group of young ladies, and I’m certain each will go on to impact our world in positive ways. We’ve been blessed to have coached them,” said Don Seale, coach.
