A man in a stolen vehicle died after a confrontation with Bashaw RCMP.

Around 9:15 a.m. on Oct. 19 on Range Road 234 near Highway 11, about 15 kilometres southwest of Alix, Bashaw RCMP members were on patrol when they located a stolen vehicle parked on the rural road.

A lone male occupant was approached by the officers and a confrontation took place, which police say ended up with the officers firing their weapons.

EMS was dispatched and the man was eventually taken to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance in critical condition. However, the individual later succumbed to his injuries.

The officers involved were not injured in the incident.

In a statement released by the RCMP, it was said there is no further risk to the public and that the RCMP are investigating what led up to the incident. There won’t be any further comment as the officers actions are now being looked into by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

ASIRT investigates actions of police that result in either serious injury or death with a mandate to perform this duty in an effective, independent and objective manner.
