Battle River-Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek lowered the Canadian flag to half-mast at his constituency office on Monday, May 31, in memory of the 215 children found in a mass grave at a former residential school site in Kamloops, B.C.

“As a parent and an MP, I cannot imagine the pain of every family and community of the 215 children whose remains were discovered last week outside a former residential school in Kamloops,” said Kurek in a news release.

“And it’s tragic that we don’t know how many other sites like this exist across Canada. This discovery will also be painful to the Indigenous survivors who were subjected to residential schools.”

Kurek joins many elected officials, governments, and organizations that lowered their flags across Canada Monday to pay their respects to the victims, families, and the survivors of this tragedy.

The National Indian Residential School Crisis Line is available for former residential school students and others looking for support. It can be reached by calling 1.866.925.4419.
