The Stettler Regional Board of Trade has a few big projects in the works for the first part of 2024.

Starting things off is the Second-Annual Big Jack Classic ice fishing tournament which is set to take place over Family Day weekend.

The Big Jack Classic is being organized by the Big Jack Committee, a sub-committee under the Board of Trade with help from the Rochon Sands community.

According to executive director Byron Geddes, all activities will be taking place at the Rochon Sands Hall.

“It will be a weekend of family fun,” said Geddes.

“The prizes are just about equal (for kids and adults).”

With the Sylvan Lake derby changing its date to a weekend in January, Geddes is estimating between 400 and 500 people entering this year’s competition.

Also taking place as part of the festivities is the Polar Plunge, raising money for a fast-response rescue vehicle for the lake which is being organized by Kevin McDonald.

“I know he’s going to be highly successful with it,” said Geddes.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, the White Sands community will be hosting a supper at the Rochon Sands Hall.

The Big Jack Classic will also include a banquet on Sunday, Feb. 18, also at the Rochon Sands Hall.

Despite higher than seasonal temperatures through December, Geddes says that the “ice is thick” on the lake with some areas frozen “right to the bottom.”

The Big Jack Classic runs Feb. 17-18, 2024 on Buffalo Lake.

Once the Big Jack Classic is finished, the Board of Trade will be focussing on two other projects in March and April.

In March, the Board of Trade will be hosting a job fair at the Stettler SRC Hub on March 19.

According to Geddes, the job fairs provide a great opportunity for job-seekers to connect with employers in the community.

Held twice a year, a second one is also planned for Sept. 12, 2024.

In April, the Board of Trade will be hosting one of its biggest projects of the year, the Stettler Trade Show.

“The Trade Show is 80-85 per cent sold out,” said Geddes.

“We’re trying really hard to get the tradeshow full.”

The Stettler Trade Show takes place at the SRC in the two arenas and the HUB and will run from April 12-14, 2024.

Those interested in participating in the trade show can do so by contacting the Stettler Regional Board of Trade at 403-742-3181, or checking out the Stettler Regional Board of Trade website at stettlerboardoftrade.com.

~Editor’s note: The story was updated to include the Big Jack Classic is being organized by the Big Jack Classic Committee, and to clarify that Rochon sands is helping host the event.
