The Town of Bashaw completed a lighting retrofit of the Bashaw Arena and Curling Rink, with around 173 fixtures converted to LED.

The retrofit involves the replacement of existing lamp fixtures with their equivalent LED lamp technology. The LED lamps will provide similar lumen (brightness) levels at a lower wattage, thereby reducing electricity consumption of the lighting equipment, says the town.

“The Town of Bashaw has a priority of reducing annual recreation facility costs and planning for environmentally responsible infrastructure,” said Bashaw Mayor Penny Shantz in a press release.

“We are grateful for the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCA) grant, which provided us with the funding to invest in LED lights for the Bashaw Arena and Curling Rink.”

As part of MCCAC’s Recreation Energy Conservation (REC) program, MCCAC provided 75 per cent of the funding ($29, 334.75) and the Federal Gas Tax covered 25 per cent ($11,454.25) for a total cost of $40,7789.

The project was completed with a cost savings of $8,770.21.

Changing the lights to LED is expected to have an electrical energy savings of 48,723 Kwh per year and reduce green house gas emissions by 27 tonnes C02 equivalent per year.
