Starting in June 2022, Bashaw homeowners will have access to Service Line Warranties of Canada (SLWC) plans, making Bashaw the first municipality in Alberta to offer such protection to residents.

SLWC offers optional repair service plans for plumbing and sewage mishaps that fall under the homeowner’s responsibility to have fixed.

“Town of Bashaw decided to implement this new optional program so that residents have the opportunity to spare themselves from the worry and cost when a failure occurs to the water or sewer line that connects their home to the town’s systems,” stated SLCW in a press release.

The town tentatively agreed to partner with SLWC in September, 2021. Council felt there was no risk to the town and providing low-cost warranty options to residents was a great idea.

The program is provided at no cost to the town as no public funds are used to promote or administer it.

At the time, the business presented three plan options: The first, for $6 a month, would cover the homeowners’ water line. The second, to cost $8 a month, would cover all work related to a property’s sewer line, between the house and the town’s line. The third product, for $8.75 a month, would cover most matters of a home’s internal plumbing.

Since September, chief administrative officer Theresa Fuller has worked with the business to develop the introduction of the service to the community.

“We are excited to make these optional, low-cost repair plans available to our residents through a proven, reputable program like Service Line Warranties,” said Fuller in the release. “Every homeowner knows that sometimes, unfortunate things happen. To provide access to our residents with a way to eliminate the financial burden or worry from these situations is a huge win for our community.”

A letter to residents explaining the program and available service plans is to be mailed out soon. The material will be provided by SLWC but will include the Town of Bashaw’s logo to signify their partnership.

There is no obligation to participate in the plan as participation is voluntary.

SLWC states their plans are low-cost and have no deductible, providing protection for repairs that are not covered under standard homeowner’s insurance or by the municipality. Homeowners also don’t have to find a contractor themselves to do the work.

“If something goes wrong, these plans equip Bashaw homeowners with reliable access to local, licensed, and vetted contractors who can quickly and professionally complete needed repairs on service lines,” said SLWC general manager Mike Van Horne.

The SLWC program began in 2014. Bashaw joins 65 municipalities in Ontario that also provide their residents access to SLWC repair service plans.
