The results from the most recent Bashaw Star web poll are rather telling of the small town attitude regarding community support.

When readers were asked — Should the Town of Bashaw support the Bashaw Curling Club financially? — the majority were on the affirmative side of the question.

A total of 19 out of the 30 votes received stated the town should be providing money to help maintain the curling club. The rest of the votes came out as 10 saying no and one marking unsure.

There were also a few comments made on social media about the issue, with some making the connection between financial support for recreation facilities and the ability to attract new and younger residents.

“Absolutely, it’s part of the backbone of a small town,” said Graeme Bevington.

Meanwhile, Jodie Brokopp went further, stating, “We need to look at a new recreational facility. Operational costs of our current outdated facilities must be staggering. With the combination of a new school and a new facility, it would attract more young families to the area. More people, more tax dollars.”

Brad Carlson also agreed, “The town needs to look at attracting new people to town so helping different recreational facilities helps.”

However, Jan Wells noted, “It would be nice, but the curling club has been fully self-sufficient thus far and doing quite well.”
