The results of last week’s online Bashaw Star poll will come as little surprise to pretty much everyone.

When the question — Given the horrific bus tragedy last week, are you surprised by people’s response? — was posed, an overwhelming majority answered that they weren’t surprised. The crash, which occurred on April 6 at an intersection between Nipawin and Tisdale, Sk, left 16 dead and devastated not only the Humboldt Broncos hockey club but also a community and a country.

A total of 11 out of the 16 votes cast remarked that they weren’t surprised since the incident resonates with nearly everyone.

Meanwhile, another four votes noted they weren’t really surprised as the hockey community is so tight knit.

Only one vote was cast stating surprise and that the response has been overwhelming.

With the Go Fund Me page having ended on April 18, the tremendous outpouring of support helped make the campaign the largest ever in Canada at more than $15.2 million.

While donations won’t be taken online anymore, the page (https://ca.gofundme.com/funds-for-humboldt-broncos) will remain up at the behest of the hockey club in order to keep people updated on the progress in allocating the funds. That will be done via a committee and the newly created non-profit Humboldt Broncos Memorial Fund.

In addition, donations will continue to be accepted by people visiting the HumboldtStrong Community Foundation.
