Bashaw’s Atom Stars weren’t able to make the final of their home tournament held Feb. 7 and 8, posting a 2-2 record in the round robin.

Thing didn’t get off to a great start for the Stars, with Noah Ahenakew notching the club’s lone goal in a 7-1 loss to Fort Saskatchewan on Friday night.

While Fort Saskatchewan jumped out to the lead early and kept up the offensive onslaught, Bashaw wasn’t totally without their own chances.

In the first period alone, the Stars were stymied several times as the Fort Saskatchewan goaltender came up with some tremendous stops on a few breakaways as well as a couple of great chances from the slot.

The club followed up that game with a disappointing 12-6 loss Saturday morning to Medicine Hat. Team manager Stacey Pierson stated Oliver Ringwall led the way for the Stars with four goals with Luke Pierson notching the other two.

That afternoon things got brighter for the Stars as they defeated Vermillion 19-4. The goal scorers included Pierson, Ringwall, Ahenakew, Ryker Sterner, Ben Morrison, Jason Schoff, Sawyer Sinclair, Hunter Towpich, Oswald Enarson and Ayla Masse.

The Stars concluded their tournament with an 11-8 victory Sunday over Redwater. The goals came off the sticks of Ringwall, Sterner, Masse, Pierson and Dane Wedgwood.

Next up

Bashaw’s Tier 4 regular season has wrapped up with the club finishing in fifth place in their division.

The opening round of the playoffs — a two game, total goal series — was slated to start Feb. 18 with the third and fourth place teams in each division playing one of four wildcard teams.

As of press time, the Stars didn’t know which wildcard position they would be placed in and therefore didn’t know their opponent.

Before that though, the Stars atom and peewee clubs hit the road to play in the annual Winterland Invitational tournament in Bonnyville over the long weekend that also raises funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alberta. Both teams took in more than $2,600 through bottle drives in order to earn their way to participate.
