The Bashaw Farmer’s bonspiel almost had a bumpy final.

The full 28-rink bonspiel was held over the course of a week with the finals held Jan. 13. But with the extreme cold temperatures seeing a quick turnaround into warm temperatures on the Friday, water started leaking onto the curling sheets.

Organizer Stan Carlson said the extreme temperature change created condensation leaks from the roof, which created a bumpy surface on the sheets.

Curling volunteers came together early Saturday to scrape the ice, smooth it out and then pebble the ice. All three sheets were ready for the finals.

Along with scraping and pebbling, they adjusted the temperature to find a happy medium.

“There was lots of support,” said Carlson, adding he was pleased to see 28 rinks compete.

He also credited the many volunteers and sponsors of the weeklong event saying if it wasn’t for them the popular bonspiel would not have been possible.

“You’ve got to have a good committee,” he added pointing out that bonspiels like this keep the club alive.
