There is still some basketball to be played, even with the regular season coming to close for the Bashaw Rebels.
The senior boys and girls finished off league play by hosting New Norway on ‘Rivalry Night’ Feb. 8 and taking on Bawlf at home on Feb. 13 — the girls unable to post victories in either game, while the boys were able to get the win over Bawlf.
The boys are waiting for the results to come in from a few rescheduled league games for other teams in order to know who and when they will play in the 1A zone playoffs.
“Our season is not done as we are definitely making the zones,” stated Rebels team captain Grant Golinowski.
“This season has been better than last. We have done a lot of team building and have had our ups and downs, but are seeing growth. So overall, it has been a good season.”
Grade 11 player Jason Resler noted the last two games were a microcosm of the Rebels season to date, just with a pair of differing outcomes.
“Against New Norway, we were strong in the first two quarters and were right in the game. In the second half, the calls weren’t going our way and we lost any momentum,” he said.
“Against Bawlf, we had a good lead and played strong despite a rough game. We fell apart in the third quarter and were only up by one, but grew a comfortable lead in the fourth to secure the wine.
“We know if we are going to move forward we have to work through as a team.”
For Golinowski, having some fun and finishing well in league play are his two highlights so far this season.
“I would say one highlight is that we are finishing fourth or fifth in our league,” he said.
“We have done well in most of our tournaments and even when we were stuck overnight in Viking due to roads, we managed to have a good time.”
Senior girls
Meanwhile, the season for the Rebels senior girls is over.
That said, head coach Amanda Swedberg is pleased to have been a part of this season with the girls.
“They’ve gone through a lot of adversity and overcome a lot of injuries, all while playing with class and dignity,” she stated.
“While our record wasn’t what we’d hoped it would’ve been, the growth seen was huge.”
She added the season concluded on a high note, with a full Grade 12 line playing the final five minutes of their high school careers in the game versus Bawlf.
“I don’t think I’ll ever forget this team rallying around their teammate, to keep her privacy and dignity in tact when she had a seizure on the bench during a game,” Swedberg remarked proudly.
“The girls never thought twice about it, they just stepped up and did what needed to be done.”
