The Bashaw Star is a heritage paper that’s been a part of this strong, independent community since 1915.

I was taught in journalism school that a newspaper article is the first draft of history. That’s a big responsibility, and why I love what I do and feel that it is so important.

I believe in local, community journalism. A local community paper has its thumb on the pulse of a town, and shares reliable, credible stories that matter to readers, written by trained journalists who know how to report in a fair and balanced way, and have a vested interest in the success of a community.

Bashaw Star is part of Black Press Media, and through difficult economic times, now and in the past, difficult decisions have to be made.

Although there is no longer a physical newspaper office in Bashaw, Black Press has ensured the continued publication of the Bashaw Star, providing local stories about town council, sports and community events, as well as regional stories that may be useful or interesting to readers.

We go the distance to serve advertisers and to tell your stories and hope to be able to continue to do so.

With the current, ongoing COVID-19 crisis and the closure of businesses, local advertising revenue, the lifeblood of a newspaper, has dried up.

As a result, the editorial staff that provide local articles for Bashaw and Ponoka have had their hours reduced in a necessary effort to weather this storm. Despite this, we remain dedicated to serving the community of Bashaw for as long as we are able, which we hope will be for many years to come.

Although we traditionally rely on advertising from businesses to support us, during this time, they are unable to do so. That is why we are making an appeal to individuals, to please consider purchasing a subscription to the Bashaw Star.

Please meet us half way and help us continue to go the distance, to provide reliable, credible information to readers during this critical time, and beyond. For less than 70 cents a week, you can a receive a weekly copy of the Bashaw Star and have 24/7 unlimited access to bashawstar.com. Please email admin@stettlerindependent.com to support local journalism. Thank you for your support.
